About the Organization

With the 2011 Ugaadi celebrations during the Presidency of Sri Sunil Kantharaju, the Sangama committee hosted a hugely successful ‘Snehada Sammilana’ with visits by the neighboring Kannada Kootas from Chicago (Vidyaranya) and Indianapolis (Mallige). This has initiated the beginning of a long term bond between the neighbors and allowed us all to share our talents.

Sangama celebrated its "Silver Jubilee" during the Ugadi celebrations of 2010 to mark 25 years of glorious history and tradition during the Presidency of Sri Aravinda Upadhya and his committee. It was a one full day festival filled with all kinds of activities. Chief Guest was Smt. Nalini Maiya, a Kannada writer from Chicago area.

History

Before 1985, there were only a handful of Kannadiga families in St. Louis. A few like-minded people got together and thought of forming an organization of Kannadigas in St. Louis area to meet on special occasions, celebrate special events, exchange ideas, and take special pride in exhibiting talents inherent to Karnataka. Thus SANGAMA was born. Its inauguration was by Sri Nagappayya Aithal during Ugaadi festival of 1985. Father’s Day Picnic, Ganesha Festival and Kannada Rajyothsava and New Year were added to the yearly activity.

With the influx of many bright, talented people from all walks of life to this metropolitan area, this organization is growing year over year into a very dynamic and vibrant organization. It is very gratifying and heartwarming to see our younger generation taking active role in our activities and embracing our arts and culture. They are the guardians of a fine legacy.

Sangama members have been fortunate to enjoy visits from innumerable number of well known musicians, poets and artists. A few to mention are famous musicians like Sri Mysore Ananthswamy, Smt. B.K. Sumithra, Sri. Vidhyabhooshana Theertha, Sri CS Ashwath and Sri Ganesh Desai, comedian like Sri Kannan, mono-artist (Ekapatrabhinaya) Sri. C.R. Simha, famous poets/writers like Sri. G.S.Shivarudrappa, Sri. Nissar Ahmed, Sri. Lakshminarayana Bhatta, Sri. A.N. Moorthi Rao, famous Yakshagana artists Sri Keremane Shambhu Hegde and Sri Nebbur Narayana Hegde, famous kaavya-chitra artists like Shathavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh and Sri BKS Varma, and Kannada ventriloquist Kumari Indushree.

In 1990-91, under Smt. Tara Shadaksharappa’s Presidency, Sangama organized a Midwest Kannada Conference in St. Louis. Kannada friends from many nearby states gathered in St. Louis and put together cultural programs and it was a huge success.

The new executive committee is formed during Ugaadi celebration and each committee brings its own ingenuity to the organization.
